Robert Fulton

Robert Fulton Robert Fulton Robert FultonOvercoming several failures early in his career, American engineer and inventor Robert Fulton (1765 1815) is credited with developing the first successful commercial steamboat in the early1800s.Fulton welches born near Lancaster, PA, on November 14, 1765. At an early age, he welches known to enjoy building mechanical devices. Some legends say he built roman candles, rockets, and a hand-propelled paddle wheelboat. As a teenager, his interests turned to art and at the age of 18 he moved to Philadelphia, where he was able to support himself through sales of portraits and technical drawings. At the age of 21, Fulton traveled to London to study painting with family friend Benjamin West, who was one of the leading American painters living in England. Fulton met with limited success as a painter and the publics response to his work was disappointing.During this period, England was in the midst of its industrial revolution and Fulton was impressed wi th the many engineering feats that were being accomplished, particularly in the areas of canals, mines, bridges, roads and factories. Still living in England, he focused his creativity on current engineering challenges and became involved in a project to entwurf a canal system to replace the conventional locks that were in use at the time. He was granted an English patent in 1794 for his first invention ? a double inclined plane system for hauling canal boats over difficult terrain. He later developed plans for cast iron aqueducts and invented a mechanical dredge to speed the construction of canals. His work with inland waterways culminated in a publication in 1796, entitled Treatise on the Improvement of Canal Navigation.Robert Fultons NautilusIn 1797, he traveled to Paris to continue his research on canal construction, but soon became intrigued with the idea of building plunging boat, a precursor to the modern submarine. Fulton sought funding for the project from the French govern ment, which was at war with England, proposing to build a submarine-like ship that could be used to place powder mines on the bottom of British warships, somewhat like a torpedo. The French agreed, and Fulton launched the first submarine, the Nautilus, at Rouen, France. Although the ship performed well during testing, it wasnt fast enough to engage the nimble sloops of the British navy and the program was scrapped. He later tested several military inventions for the British government but met with limited success as well.Seemingly undauntedby these failures, Fulton refocused his engineering creativity on the use of steam power. While in Paris, Fulton met Robert Livingston, the American foreign minister to France who also owned a twenty-year monopoly on steam navigation in New York state. After listening to Fultons ideas for a steam powered ship, Livingston agreed to a business partnership in 1802 that would provide Fulton with the resources necessary to build his ship. One year late r, they launched a modest steam-powered boat on the Seine river that was based on the design of fellow American John Fitch, who seven years earlier had demonstrated his steamboat on the Delaware River at Philadelphia, but was unable to make it a commercial success. While Fultons steamship on the Seine River traveled at only 3 mph, he proved the technology could work with some modifications. In 1803, Fulton returned to New York to refine his steamship designs which were based on the paddle wheel for propulsion. After overcoming British ausfuhr laws, he acquired a steam engine from an English company owned by James Watt, who received a patent for a powerful steam engine the same year Fulton was born. After four years of development, in 1807, Fulton launched the Clermont, a steam-powered vessel that made the 150-mile journey up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany in 32 hours at a speed of 5 miles per hour, reducing the usual sailing time by 64 hours. It became the first commer cially successful steamship. In the following years, Fulton launched 13 more steamships, including the Demologus, the first steam powered war ship.Fulton died of pneumonia in New York City at the age of 49. As a result of his inventions, steamships became a major source of transportation on rivers and resulted in a significant reduction in inland shipping costs.Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications. As a result of his inventions, steamships became a major source of transportation on rivers and resulted in a significant reduction in inland shipping costs.

Happiness 3 tips for finding a job that you love

Happiness 3 tips for finding a job that you loveHappiness 3 tips for finding a job that you loveSome might call me lucky I absolutely lovemy job.I didnt always. In my previous role as an employee at another company, I felt that I welchesnt able to speak up at work. Now, Im the CEO of a company that helps people communicate more openly and honestly with their coworkers. Its my dream job.People will sometimes ask me Howd you do it, Claire? Howd you find happiness at work? Its a tricky question to answer because happiness is individual for every person - what makes me happy might not make you happy. But for me,happiness at work meansa deeper, longer-lasting sense of purposethat doesnt fade. Its not a paycheck bonus or a fancy office - its meaning in the work Im doing, in the people Im helping, and in the impact Im creating. Here are three realizationsthat helped me findhappiness at work.Be honest about what you wantIn my senior year of college, I decided to start a company with a few frien ds. I welches still in school taking classes to graduate, I was student body president, and I was interning at a VC firm downtown - all while trying to start this company. In other words, I was completely in over my head and over-committed. When I did eventually graduate and joined the company full-time, we werent paying ourselves and routinely worked 100-hour weeks. Needless to say, I burnt out. I stopped sleeping, I wasnt eating, andmy overall health and well-being deteriorated. Eventually, my co-founders asked me to leave the company because it was clear I was confused about what I really wanted. I realized Id gone along with them this entire time not because I wanted to start this company with thembut out of obligation. I felt like I owed it to my friends. It was something I was supposed to do - what a cool opportunity, right? In hindsight, its clear thats not what I really wanted to do - and Im so grateful for that experience. It taught me an important lesson you must seek the truth for what you really want yourself. Trustyour own opinionsOnce youre brave enough to ask yourself what you want, you have to trust yourself in finding the answer.Early in my senior year of college, I had yet to tell my parents that I was going to start a company. Honestly, I was terrified. College is expensive, and the idea of telling my parents that I was going to start a companyand take no salary was nerve-wracking. I remember consciously choosing tonotask for other peoples advice. If I had asked my parents what I should do after college, I know they would have told me to go to graduate school, which is what they did. If I would have asked my mentor what I should do, he would have told me to go get a job at a corporation, which is what he did.Everyone is biased by their own opinion. The only way you cant go wrong is by listening to yourself. If I hadnt trusted myself, I would not have become an entrepreneur today.Work with what you haveBefore I started my current company, I h ad $10,000 in savings but no idea what my business was going to be. To make progress, every day, I asked myself Whats the most I can do with what I have right now? At the time, the answerwas to do as much research as possible to become an expert in the field. So I spent a few months and did that. Then, it was to do a case study on a company using the knowledge and expertise Id developed. So I went and did that. I continued to ask that question, and slowly, month by month, Ibuilt a consulting business and a software product, which was ultimately what I wanted to do. When youre striving for something greater, that gap between where you are and where you want to be can be daunting. Its easy to give up.Focusing on what you can do with what you already have makes things so much more attainable.Soon youll have closed the gap and be where you want to be.At the end of the day, I dont want to be considered lucky that I love my job. I believe everyone can and deserves to be happy at work - an d hopefully, my three realizations are helpful as you find your own way to happiness at work.Claire Lew is theCEO of Know Your Company.

What to Eat on the Day of a Big Job Interview

What to Eat on the Day of a Big Job InterviewWhat to Eat on the Day of a Big Job InterviewGrowing up my mother used to tell me growing up, you are what you eat. While I eventually outgrew my childish giggles imagining sunny side egg top hats and broccoli-laden feet, as an adult I also realized that this sage advice is a bit more complicated than it initially seems. I mean, sure, we all know that starting the day off with a solid breakfast provides much-needed fuel for the day to come. If youve ever tried to survive that early morning meeting on one double mocha latte you know first kralle the consequences of not feeding your body and your brain. This goes double for stressful or energy intensive events, such as nailing that big bewerbungsgesprch youve been anticipating for weeks on end. And while my anecdotal evidence, learned over a plate of moms best scrambled eggs and bacon, is certainly solid supporting evidence, science has come a long ways recently in kicking this sage advice in to overdrive. Steven Pratt, MD, author of Superfoods Rx Fourteen Foods Proven to Change Your Life, is just the recent in a plethora of scientists, doctors, and nutritionists who are advocating hacking our brains by filling up on key ingredients in the mornings or days leading up to that tasking interview or other life events. So what are these nutritional marvels that may give you a mental leg up for your next big job interview? Weve broken down a few of our favorites belowNuts, Seeds and Whole GrainsOh MyNuts and seeds have long been touted as excellent sources of essential vitamins and nutrients including the brainpower boosting Vitamin E. In studies, Vitamin E has been shown to boost mental clarity and stave off the effects of age on your brain, long term. Whole grains such as Flax are also excellent sources of mentally stimulating compounds such as alpha linolenic acid, a fatty acid that helps neurons process sensory input. Consider that off the cuff interview question nailedSta rt Your Day Off on a Berry Good FootPerhaps one of the tastiest and worst kept secrets in the great superfood mythos, berries of various varieties are jam packed with everything your brain needs to keep performing at tip top shape. Goji berries are chock full of beta carotene (move over carrots) and outdo oranges when it comes to vitamin C. Blueberries and blackberries contain powerful antioxidants which are crucial for preventing brain damage from free radicals. Move over brain fatiguePlay Your Carbs RightWhile everyone loves a good stack of pancakes during weekend brunch, right before your big interview may not be the most opportune time to carb up. Items that contain white flour, simple sugars, and other easily processed carbohydrates can cause fluctuations in blood sugar with large energy spikes followed by equally low crashes. If youre inclined to eat starches, consider low glycemic impact fruits, vegetables and grains such as quinoa or whole wheat. You can indulge in that cele bratory slice of chocolate cake after you land the gig. Be a Lean, Mean, Protein MachineRather than carb-loading for your power breakfast, consider packing on the protein before your big interview. Lean sources of protein are slower to digest, providing an even and consistent fuel source to power you through the day. Many proteins also have beneficial fatty acids that help brain function. Heres to fueling the body and mindOmega 3s, Health Food PowerhousesUnless youve been hiding under a nutritional rock for the last few years, youve probably heard about the benefits of healthy Omega 3 fatty acids. These tasty building blocks provide anti-inflammatory properties as well as aid in short term memory health, handy for being able to recall names, places, and dates during mission-critical interviews. Salmon and other deepwater fish, eggs and certain veggies are big winners in the Omega-3 category so load up on that lox, statOverall Tips for Interview Day MealsPreparing your own sit-down m eal on the day of your big interview provides more than just nutritional benefits as well. Regular meals are vital aspects of creating important routines that help your brain sort, process, and access information more efficiently. Meal time with family and friends can also be important times to download and exchange ideas or career advice. You never know when mom might just have a piece of sage wisdom that helps you land that major gig. Portion sizes, regardless of contents, are also important to help you feel your best. Regardless of what you eat, a large meal that leaves you overfull will cause energy dips as your body diverts energy to help digest the nutritional feast. Finally, dont be afraid to bring a small snack in the form of a piece of fruit or granola bar, especially if you know your interview will take place over several hours. Noshing down a few hundred calories over a quick break in between interviewers can help keep you alert and undistracted by a rumbling stomach. Rem ember that your interview is your best chance to make a good first impression and when you feel your best you also perform your best. Fuel your body and your mind to set yourself up for interview success

You should always surround yourself with people smarter than you

You should always surround yurself with people smarter than youYou should always surround yourself with people smarter than youI meet a lot of entrepreneurs today who are afflicted with an unfortunate misconception that their primary job as the leader of their company is to tell other people what to do.This mentality bears a variety of repercussions, but it particularly affects hiring processes. Entrepreneurs infected with this misconception believe that they dont need people who are brighter or smarter than them, but rather, people who are malleable and accepting of direction. If they come a bit cheaper? Well, thats a win-win.The problem is, that couldnt be further from the truth. The job of a team or company leader is not to tell people what to do. Rather, your job is to create conditions conducive to growth and success to supply great people with the resources they need to achieve great things. In fact, hiring people on account of their perceived docility will only increase your c ompanys chance of failure. As a founder, manager, or CEO whos building out a team, your job is similar to that of an army general to find and cultivate talented lieutenants and give them the tools they need to succeed. You need to find the smartest people the strongest people and motivate them with a strategy and mission thats intrinsically captivating. If those people happen to be smarter or stronger than you, thats a very good thing.Simply put, hiring smart people leads to better results. Heres why.Your geschftlicher umgang will grow faster if you have smart, skilled people in every sphereHeres the bottom line progress by way of promptly completed projects or procedural innovation comes faster when skilled, smart people are driving the core processes that are important to your business. It took my team and I at Skylum a long time to learn this. Like many first-time founders, we actually had the opposite impression that wed make progress faster by hiring people who perhaps had le ss expertise, but came cheaper and were positioned to join the company quickly.Soon, of course, we discovered the truth it pays to invest in people who are dynamically capable people who are in fact smarter than you, and whom you can learn from. Why, exactly? Well, for one thing, intelligent employees will allow you to solve problems you otherwise wouldnt be able to on your ownGreat hires can improve aspects of your business that you with your limited expertise and perspective might not have even seen as needing improvement. For example, my team recently hired a person whos an expert when it comes to email marketing, automation, and after-purchase customer experiences. His first day on the job, he sat down in front of his laptop, cracked his fingers, and combed through the processes wed built to drive these functions. Id been under the impression that they were pretty strong. But within an hour, our new hire had redesigned them so they were flawless. Most impressively, he built a sy stem to ensure that the data we collect through these channels from email, to advertising, to customer feedback was made available to our team in one easy-to-find place. This allowed us more insight into customer behavior. We had no idea that much streamlining was even possible. When you hire people like this, your company will improve in ways you can hardly anticipate. And when problems arise that might have otherwise necessitated the hiring of a consultant or outside expert, youll find you already have that expertise in-house.Another benefit of hiring genuine professionals? They can operate independentlyWhen youre building out a team, what you should be looking for are people who can eventually own their projects or processes. If theyre capable, such people will not only complete those projects theyll be able to innovate and improve the processes they used to complete them, creating more effective workflows.Such people are crucial to your companys success. Their ability to own cri tical functions frees you to focus on other matters, and their ability to innovate will make your company more creative.Plus, in time, theyll grow to become leaders in their own right managing their own teams to create value at scale. That increases your productivity exponentially. So how do you hire these kinds of people? The catch to hiring people like this is theyre often already known experts in their fields, which means theyll likely be expensive to bring on board. The good news, though, is that experts arent always looking for the most lucrative contract. What they really want is to play a role in solving interesting problems. They want to join a mission that is intrinsically satisfying. For this reason, when interviewing candidates for a given role, you should make sure to articulate your companys vision and mission clearly and succinctly. Then, you should also ask candidates two simple questions, which will help you identify whether theyre properly motivatedHow much money do you want to make in 2 years?Where do you think you can bring the company within the next year?Their answers will show you whether or not theyre inspired to join your team for the right reasons. And if youre interviewing the right people, youll generally be inspired by what you hear. Dynamically capable employees are usually seeking big challenges, along with assurances that theyll play an important role in the companys attempts to solve those challenges moving forward.Even with all this knowledge, you wont build the best team if you hold onto the belief that you need to be the most capable person in your companyIts true that when youre building out your team, quality is more important than quantity. Thats important to remember. But its more important to remember that you as the CEO dont need to be the most qualified person on your team the ultimate expert. In fact, you shouldnt be.Whatever war your company is waging, you want the best people beside you on the battlefield.Thats what wi ll give you the best chance to win. This post was originally published on Quora.com.

Finding a Part-Time Sales Job

Finding a Part-Time Sales JobFinding a Part-Time Sales JobWhether you are looking for a parte-time sale sttte because you need a second (or third) income source, want to give abverkauf a try and dont want to commit to a full-time position or have decided that working more than one job is more your style, finding good paying part-time sales positions can be challenging. Many employers who hire sales professionals prefer that their reps work full-time at driving revenue for their companies and are reluctant to consider part-time sales reps. Fortunately, there are some places you can look for part-time work. The Retail Industry The retail industry is the most obvious industry to look into when looking for part-time sales work. In fact, the majority of those working in sales positions in a retail shop are not full-time employees. While the retail industry certainly has plenty of part time opportunities, you will likely encounter some challenges. Most retail sales positions are low pa ying ones.Entry level positions usually require weekend and evening hoursVery few offer benefitsMay not earn commission but only a base salary Despite these (and other) drawbacks, looking for a part-time sales position in the retail industry usually, produces positive results for those willing to deal with the challenges and still produce positive results. 1099 Positions Unlike a typical employee positions, 1099 positions generally offer incredible flexibility. In other words, if you have a 1099 position, you work when you want to work. The downside is that very few 1099 positions offer a salary and those who work under a 1099 agreement work completely on a commission basis. 1099 positions are often filled by Independent sales professionals, looking to either augment their incomes, find another source of income to replace their full-time positions income or by those simply following a passion for a specific product or service. Expect to find several companies, many of which will be start-up companies, with 1099 sales position openings. Inside Sales The Inside Sales industry is an exciting industry that has experiencedrapid growth and change during the 2000s. This growth is partly due to the lower cost involved in employing inside reps when compared to outside sales reps and advances in technology. Inside sales is a tough position often filled with more than a fair share of rejection. Several employers hire part-time inside sales reps to weed out those who cant cut a full-time position as well as to guard against the burn out that dialing for dollars often creates. Auto Sales While the majority of those in the auto sales industry are full-time employees, many smaller dealerships or used car dealers employee part-time sales reps. The benefits for a dealer to hire part-time include Save money by not paying benefitsArrange scheduling to have sales reps working during busy hours and not having to pay full-time employees during typically slow times. Can u se part-time positions as proving grounds for full-time consideration One of the biggest challenges with working part-time selling cars is experienced when working in a dealership that also employees several full-time sales reps. In auto dealerships, reps usually take turns working with customers who walk through their doors. Imagine being a full-time employee putting in a 10 hour day and have a part-time sales rep close a profit-rich sale simply because the part-time rep was next in line. Your Current Employer If you currently hold a full-time sales position and want to cut your hours back, you may want to consider asking your manager about going part-time. While this may bring some negative exposure to yourself if your employer doesnt offer part-time work, you may be able to build a strong enough case why your employer should consider allowing you to work part-time. Some benefits that your employer would realize by allowing a full-timer to become a part-timer include Full-time employees are already well trainedFull-time employees, in general, have already proven themselves to be good employees.Employers can save money by allowing you to work part-time as part-time positions seldom include benefitsEmployers want to keep good employees. And if your employer knows that you want to go part-time, they may see enough value in keeping you, even if for fewer hours per week, than losing you to another part-time position.

Most People Are Looking for Jobs the Wrong Way. Heather Hund Wants to Fix That

Most People Are Looking for Jobs the Wrong Way. Heather Hund Wants to Fix That Most People Are Looking for Jobs the Wrong Way. Heather Hund Wants to Fix That Write a resume. Send it to a couple dozen different companies. Receive zero responses. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. One of the most common frustrations job seekers have is sending out tons of applications, only to hear nothing back in return. And as a result, many of them view the job search as near-impossible. But the truth is, finding a great job isn’t as hard as most people think it is - or at least, it doesn’t have to be. That’s the central theme behind Heather Hund’s new book, Art of the Job Search . Hund believes that finding a job isn’t so much about what you do - it’s about how you do it. And as long as you pay attention to the details, you can find a job you love in record time. We reached out to Hund to learn more about her best job search tips, why finding a job you love is an investment in your career and how job seekers have more power than they might think - here’s what she had to say. Heather Hund: I left my job and didn’t have another one, and realized that I really wanted to find a job that I loved, but also that I had no idea how to do it. So, my first step in the job search was actually interviewing people about how they found a job that they loved. Then, I used that information at each step of the process, and ended up getting several offers and, even more importantly, finding a job that I really loved, and it changed my life. And I thought that was information that needed to be out into the world. Heather Hund: When I began looking for a new job after I left my old one, I dropped my resume online for all sorts of things - some looked interesting, and some didn’t. And after a few weeks of that, I realized that wasn’t actually moving me in the right direction. So I then took a giant step back and took a self-assessment, similar to the one included in the book, to figure out “What do I actually want to do? What are my strengths? How do I want to apply those?” Then I applied that same bit of strategy throughout the search, from writing my resume to applying to interviewing to negotiating . So I think being strategic is what makes the difference between ending up at a job, and finding a job that you really love. Heather Hund: As humans, we’re wired to avoid rejection . I think it’s biological, and probably helped keep us alive at some point. But I also think that today, it doesn’t help us much, and it prevents us from going for the things we really want. So it’s about flipping the dialogue - instead of thinking, “Do they want me?” Ask yourself, “Do you actually want to work there?” Do you like the culture, do you feel good about the role, do you like the people that are interviewing you? Remember, you’re interviewing them. While it’s important to answer the person’s questions, when you take control and start asking more questions, it can actually make you a more attractive candidate. It shows that you can problem solve, and that you’re thinking about things from a higher level - from an ownership perspective - which I think is super powerful. Yes, they have the job that they can offer you, but you have the skills, the ability, the talent to offer them. You’re a giant asset as well. People often undervalue themselves, and don’t realize how valuable they are. Heather Hund: Absolutely. I think the most powerful thing to do in that situation is to ask questions that you would ask if you were already in the role, like “What are the priorities right now, and what will they be in a year?” Heather Hund: It’s so true - people often see loving your job as an indulgence, like “You shouldn’t love your work, it’s work!” But think about it: When you were doing something that you loved, either at work or as a hobby, were you better at it? I would guess yes. When I was writing this book, I definitely found that research backed this up. People who love their job get more raises, they get promoted more, they have better relationships with their managers, and they’re just happier, which is a huge, huge benefit. I think loving your job really is an investment in your career. Heather Hund: The growth mindset is so powerful. If I could recommend one other book, it would be Carol Dweck’s Mindset . Basically, she argues that with a growth mindset, there’s no such thing as failure - everything becomes learning. It enables you to take more risks and to go after the things you really want, even when you’re afraid, and I think this includes finding a job you really love. People don’t really acknowledge how hard job searching is emotionally, and that’s why I decided to devote an entire chapter to talking about how to get into that growth mindset before you start job searching. It’s funny - I know it doesn’t have to do with the tactics of job searching, but I actually think this chapter might be the most important one in the book. Heather Hund: Like many other people (and often women in particular), at my first job I thought “If I just put my head down and work super hard, I’ll get noticed.” But what I started noticing was that the people who got the coolest projects and the special opportunities and the fast promotions were often the ones that had relationships with the people who were making the decisions. That was a hard thing to notice, because the truth is I hate networking. Most people kind of balk when they hear ‘networking’. No one wants to network, and I think it has a bad reputation - people just think of awkward conversation. For me, it took a reframe of what networking is. Really, it’s just talking to people. And what I realized over the course of my career was that I don’t like “networking”, but I love talking to people and getting to know them. Building those relationships is why networking is often more important than the work itself. To be clear, it is actually important to be good at your job, but it’s also really important to build strong relationships so that you get to know when cool things are happening that you might be excited about, or that you could contribute toward. Networking can lead to not only opportunities, but also long-term mentors and friendships. And it can often last beyond just one job, which is pretty awesome. Heather Hund: I like to start with small talk for two reasons: one, I think it helps you build the relationship, and two, I think talking about your weekend or your family or your hobbies just takes the pressure off of the conversation. Don’t go into it with an outcome-based mindset - just have a conversation. I find it quite helpful to write out questions (there are a few that I include in the book), not so much to bring with me, but just to get me thinking, “What are the things that I want to cover in this conversation?” The biggest hurdle honestly is just doing it. In my first real networking conversation, I was waiting for the elevator after work and my colleague was just standing there, and we struck up a random conversation. After a while I said, “Hey, do you want to grab coffee?” And he said “Sure.” And I remember thinking, “Ah, that’s so easy! You just ask somebody if they want to grab coffee.” Heather Hund: One of the things that stuck with me from business school was when a friend told me, “Whenever I start a new job, I make sure to be incredible for the first six months.” I’d never thought about it before, but he was totally right. First impressions are very real, and very lasting. A lot of people go into a new job thinking, “I need to figure out exactly what my boss wants me to do, and I need to do those things.” But what people don’t realize is that often, their boss doesn’t know what they want. They’re super busy, and they really just need somebody to take something and run with it. So it’s more about how you frame yourself as someone who can be a problem-solver and a real thought partner - that’s what sets apart the amazing people from the good people. Another huge thing is feedback . Some companies are great about having feedback structures in place, and then some aren’t. If feedback is not a regular thing at your company, take initiative and lead a feedback discussion with your boss. Feedback, when done in the right way, builds much stronger relationships, helps you develop and improve faster and can take you further in your career. Then the last thing I talk about in the book is promotions. Marissa Mayer once said, “I got every single one of [my promotions] by asking and getting feedback and planning for it.” You need to start thinking about your new career path - you don’t necessarily need to have an answer, but think of where you want to go and what you need to do to get there before you even want to make that transition.

ISTP - Learn About This Myers Briggs Personality Type

ISTP - Learn About This Myers Briggs Personality Type ISTP - Learn About This Myers Briggs Personality Type If you went to a career counselor who administered the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), you may have learned that your personality type is ISTP. You are probably wondering what these four letters can tell you about your career and what you should do with it. This article will clear up all your confusion. ISTP is one of 16 personality types Carl Jung, a psychiatrist identified many years ago. The MBTI is based on his theory. Jung believed that personality types are made up of four pairs of opposite preferences for how we do certain things. We energize through introversion (I) or extroversion (E), perceive information by sensing (S) or intuition (N), make decisions by thinking (T) or feeling (F) and live our lives by judging (J) or perceiving (P). Each of us favors one member of each pair of preferences over the other one. That doesnt mean Your code is ISTP because the results of the MBTI indicated that your preferences are Introversion, Sensing, Thinking and Judging. Career development professionals  believe the code can be used to help people make career-related decisions such as choosing a career and accepting a job offer.  Thats the Jungian theory in a nutshell and how it applies to your career choice. Now lets examine your code more closely. Well look at what each preference means and then explore how you can use this information to make career-related decisions. I, S, T and P: What Each Letter of Your Personality Type Code Means I:  When you hear the word introversion, like most people, you may think shy or unable to be around others. Theres actually so much more to it than that. As someone who prefers Introversion, you are energized by things within yourself. It doesnt mean you dont like being around other people, just that you prefer to spend time alone. Therefore, you dont need friends or coworkers to motivate you.S:  As an individual who favors sensing, you use your five senses help you decode information that comes your way. You see details rather than the patterns that might emerge from them. You dont tend to forecast what the future may hold but live fully in the present. T: Your preference for thinking means you take a lot of time to make decisions. It is not because you are indecisive, but instead that you carefully consider all your options. You use logic, not emotion. You dont mind critiquing people.P: As someone who is perceiving, you are flexible and spontaneous. It means you can easily adapt  to change. On the downside, however, you dont do very well with deadlines. It is important to keep in mind that these are only your preferences. That means that while you prefer to do things a certain way, you can adapt and use the opposite preference when you need to. Also remember that each preference in your four-preference type affects the other three. Finally, your preferences are dynamic in that they can change throughout your life. How to Use Your Code to Help You With Career-Related Decisions You can consider your personality type when you are choosing a career or deciding whether to accept a job offer based on the environment in which you will have to work. When making a career choice, you should look at the two middle letters in your code, S, and T. Because you prefer sensing and thinking, you should look for occupations in which you can solve concrete problems. You also want to work in a career that values the importance of careful and deliberate decision making. Take into account, as well,  your  interests,  aptitudes  and  work-related values  when choosing a career. These are some options for you to think about: Airline Pilot Dental Hygienist Athletic Coach EMT and Paramedic Biomedical Engineer Engineering Technician Brick Mason Geoscientist Camera Operator Intelligence Agent Carpenter Paralegal Civil Engineer Photographer Computer Programmer Radiologic Technologist Computer Systems Analyst Software Developer Your preferences of introversion and perceiving can guide you when  deciding whether a work environment will be right for you. As someone who prefers introversion, you would enjoy making your own decisions about how to complete projects. Since deadlines arent your thing, consider a job that allows you to work at your own pace. Sources: The Myers-Briggs Foundation Web Site.Baron, Renee.  (1998)  What Type Am I?. How to Create a Maternity Leave Out-of-Office Message

How to Create a Maternity Leave Out-of-Office Message How to Create a Maternity Leave Out-of-Office Message Creating the right out-of-office reply is important, especially when out on maternity leave. The message  creates a personal boundary  that alerts the sender that you will be unavailable during your leave and informs them about who they can contact during your absence. Setting this up early can allow you to craft a purposeful note. This way, you will feel confident in your message, and your co-workers and clients will feel cared for. Heres an explanation to help you understand the importance of your message and why you should schedule time to work on it. It Sets Expectations for Everyone   The maternity leave you take after your baby is born is private and very  special. The moments with your newborn can never be recaptured. Therefore, its important to protect this period in your life. You know how it feels to get a work email while on vacation, right? You feel compelled to send a quick reply. But while on leave, you dont really have time for that. Also, the quick reply can balloon into a bigger issue to address. You are welcoming a new member into your family.  This time of bonding will be filled with sleepless nights, an unpredictable schedule, recuperation, doctor appointments, visitors, and much more.  Also, there will be a good amount of change that youll want to manage. Writing emails under these conditions will not produce your best work.   Your out of office message will protect you from work  interruptions as well as poorly thought out emails.   Setting boundaries  is important during this time. To help put your work life on hold, establish that your newborn and everything that comes with the bundle of joy is the top priority.  When you create the right out-of-office message,  people will understand what your current priority is and will respect the boundary it sets. So how do you create an awesome message to help protect such a special time? Give Your Out-of-Office Message Some Thought When around 26 weeks pregnant, start working on the out-of-office message.  If given the option to save a title for this,  title it Maternity Leave - Out of Office.   Preparing the message ahead of time gives you more control over what your message will say. You are the one who knows how to do your job, who will be taking over your responsibilities, and when you may be back to the office. Decide if you want to include a specific return-to-work date or week, or consider not mentioning a date if youre unsure. If you dont list a specific person the sender can contact, decide if you want to provide your managers email and/or phone number. Creating the message early saves you, your employer, and your contacts time. You may need to leave the office unexpectedly (to deliver your baby); as a result, having a prepared message gives your IT admin or your manager a message to use.  Do you want IT or your manager setting the tone of this message? Heck no! Furthermore, the message created by your employer may not reflect the language or message you want to convey to your contacts. It can also cause confusion or misunderstandings with clients, especially when out for an extended period of time. Inform your manager when your message is complete. Theyll love to hear that youre prepared for your exit, and theres one less thing  theyll need to do to support you. Things to Include in Your Message Below is a sample out-of-office message you can use.  Once you enable the message in your email software, it will automatically respond to  any emails sent to you during a specified time. It is up to you if youd like to inform  recipients  where you are. You could simply say you are out of the office, or  you can announce that you are on your maternity leave. You can use a variant of this email message for extended vacations or business trips, as well. Where you see (parentheses), insert the appropriate words or phrases for your circumstances. Maternity Leave Out-of-Office Sample Email Message (Text Version) Thank you for your email. I am out of the office on maternity leave until (date you expect to return). If you need immediate assistance please contact (name of colleague covering for you, with contact details, your managers email, or a phone number).(If you have certain projects you cover list the project name and the person covering you).If your matter is not urgent Ill reply to your email upon my return.Kind regards,(Your name) Expand

Identifying Your Job Interview Strengths and Weaknesses

Identifying Your Job Interview Strengths and Weaknesses Identifying Your Job Interview Strengths and Weaknesses One of the favorite questions of interviewers across industries and job positions is asking candidates to name their personal and professional strengths and weaknesses.  An applicant’s ability to identify their areas of excellence and improvable traits demonstrates critical thinking skills, higher level analytical ability and on the spot conversational know how.   While these are all positives from the interviewer’s perspective, being on the firing line of these types of queries can be a curveball to even the most seasoned of job searchers.  Most people dislike talking about themselves in even social scenarios, much less with a career opportunity on the line.  For a prepared interviewee, however, there’s no need to fear which is why we’ve compiled some simple exercises, questions and prompts to help you tackle this pivotal portion of the interview with ease. Take a Personal Inventory The first step in preparing for your job interview involves an exercise in self-analysis.  Grab yourself paper and pencil or a handy, high-tech device, and compile a simple list of strengths and weaknesses.  At this point, you won’t be looking for traits with a specific career or employment bent, only the areas in which you believe you excel or need improvement. If you find yourself at ease in crowds, add “sociable” or “great conversationalist” to the pros list.  If you’re often distracted when you set on a specific task, throw “focus” on the con side.  In addition to personality traits, list skills that you’ve acquired through your education or prior experiences such as advanced certifications, knowledge about specific programs or systems and more. During this list-making exercise, it’s important to be as honest as possible.  It’s not like you’ll be sharing this list with your mom, after all.  A frank analysis is an important first step and withholding less than desirable traits because of personal embarrassment only lessens the effectiveness of your interview prep. Let’s Talk About Those Strengths While talking about your positive traits may seem like a walk in the park when done in a crowded bar with your latest Tinder date, pitching your attractive qualities to a prospective employer is another monster altogether.  There’s a fine line between confidence and boastfulness and crossing that invisible mark can mean the difference between a job offer and a career version of a dear john letter. Analyze your list of strengths and compare with the listing for the job you’ll be interviewing for.  Choose several traits, some obvious and others more nuanced, that you believe help make you an excellent fit for the company and position.  It may also be helpful to peruse the company’s website for a list of their institutional values or history to find other areas where your skill set may be applicable.   When crafting your list of strengths that you’ll be offering up during the interview, think about ways to word your answers that come across as humble but confident.  Know your strengths but don’t pitch yourself as the best candidate that ever lived.  This approach may not only hurt your job chances, it can also set unreasonable expectations for when you do end up landing the gig. We All Have Our Weaknesses Next, you’ll want to tackle that list of weaknesses, because no one can come up roses all the time whether in life or in their careers.  The ability to spot areas where you may need improvement is a valuable trait to a prospective employer as it indicates that you have an open mind and the ability for personal and professional growth.  Most employers are looking for employees that will stick with the company long-term and these skills are critical to identifying the best candidates for the job. While it’s easy enough to point out negative traits and communicate them in simple terms, the best candidates have the ability to turn frowns upside down when it comes to their personal and professional weaknesses.  Identify traits that while seemingly negative, have the potential to be upsides when harnessed or developed fully.  Tenacity can be a negative when it means you focus on one task past its usefulness but can also be a positive when looking for innovative solutions for tough problems.   When the interviewer asks for your weakest traits, pick out these grey area characteristics.  Be sure to mention how their negatives can often be frustrating but how you’re working on pulling back or harnessing these skills to improve or become more accomplished in your career path. Overall, when answering questions about your strengths and weaknesses, keep in mind that your new employer is more interested in your skills and accomplishments that may make you a good employee and less about traits that have you leaving your bed unmade or make you an excellent gardener.  Be honest with your self-analysis, do plenty of prep work for the actual interview and you’ll be acing these tricky questions and that much closer to landing an offer for the job of your dreams.

5 Ways to Add Creativity to Any Job -The Muse

5 Ways to Add Creativity to Any Job -The Muse 5 Ways to Add Creativity to Any Job Creativity: It’s not limited to writers and designers. In fact, you can find ways to be creative in almost every job out there. (Yes, even you, the person in the finance department who’s shaking your head right now.) Though protocol and meetings are often necessary to maintain workflow, finding space to use creative skills can open up new opportunities and keep you from falling into that “work sucks my soul” mentality. Not to mention, it could land you a promotion. A study by IBM found that: “About 60% of CEOs polled cited creativity as the most important leadership quality, compared with 52% for integrity and 35% for global thinking.” So, if you’ve been craving more ingenuity in your daily routine, here are a few ways to inject it into any role: 1. Volunteer for Content Creation Whether there is a formal company newsletter, an internal sports team, or an all-hands-on-deck special event, I bet you can find someone who would love help spreading the word. Designing layouts, brainstorming (re)branding, editing photos, managing coverage, and writing copy is a fun and productive way to contribute in a more creative way. Better yet, searching out opportunities for content creation will often connect you with those organizing a new endeavor within your company. To get started, chat with your boss, a work mentor, or a colleague who could use a hand for ways to get involved. If the company is small, volunteer to pitch in with the social media presence or spearhead a potential wellness program. The key is to find organizational areas of need that align with skills you have (or are eager to develop). Maybe you love wordplay, so you volunteer to brainstorm clickable email subject lines. Or maybe you have an eye for detail, so you lend an extra hand editing external documents. Bonus: Delivering quality and consistent value in these areas could grow your value within the company, setting you up for leadership positions or additional creative opportunities. 2. Innovate Solutions for Departmental Workflow It’s easy to slip into routines to simply keep up with incoming requests or responsibilities. However, when this cycle becomes monotonous or repetitive or seems to usurp as much time as it’s supposed to be freeing up, it’s a sign that you should invent a new and better system. Why not turn your attention to areas in your work (or team) where you can suggest innovations to resolve ongoing challenges? For example, if you dread the endless chain of emails you receive each day, decide you’re going to search out a better system. For example, look into instant messaging or project management software for your team, try Tim Ferriss’ approach from The Four Hour Work Week, or poll co-workers in your department to see if they’d be up for finding ways to reduce the overall volume of email. Taking the lead on solving a department problem forces you to think creatively, giving your brain a chance to be inventive (and provide solutions to your team). 3. Learn (and Teach) a New Technical Skill Almost anyone can benefit from knowing how to maximize the technology at his or her fingertips. But some companies prioritize training more than others. If your organization isn’t providing the training you would’ve hoped for, volunteer to learn new skills yourself. Let’s say you’re a numbers person and enjoy working with data. Almost everyone knows Excel in the “I can make a spreadsheet” sense, but you might find that a class on extrapolating large amounts of analytics adds a whole new level to your work. With additional skill sets, you can brainstorm new approaches and strategies for your current role. Or, take it one step further and offer to teach your new skill to others in your team or company. By sharing what you’ve learned, you can solidify your new knowledge and also find new ways to connect to your team. The benefits of instructing others include practicing those public speaking skills, creating an agenda, and becoming a source of knowledge to others, which can beef up both your analytical strategy and interpersonal skills. 4. Create a Vision Board Specifically for Your Workspace A lack of creativity in your day to day could be a result of something as simple as working in the most boring office of all time. So, take time to re-visualize the physical space where you work. You’d be surprised how a visual board of goals and pictures for how you want to feel, create, and contribute can revitalize your desk (and your attitude). Include the colors, patterns, numbers, and people that inspire you to think expansively beyond routine tasks. Include representations of your long-term career goals to add extra motivation. The positive energy you build could increase your happiness and effectiveness, bringing you closer to your next goal. 5. Focus on Your Personal Brand OK, so some companies might not give you any room to execute on any of the options above. (They may even scoff at the idea of a vision board sitting in your cubicle!) If that's the case, it's time to go to Plan B and get creative with your personal brand. I can’t overstate the importance of personal branding. Creating and conveying a personal brand will make you memorable to colleagues, acquaintances, and (potential) clients and partners. Instead of mindlessly browsing Facebook and Twitter, think creatively about how you want to use the social media tools. What do you want to say? What do you want people to think when they view your profiles? Coming up with your unique strategy is a great way to engage your mind and build your career. Even if you’re just starting out in a job or industry, it is never too early to document your progress, experiences, and areas of contribution. The engagement that results from personal and career branding can greatly fulfill your right brain and also build an authentic and prosperous career path. You can add creativity to any job role with some initiative and an open mind. Exercise the inventive side of your brain by trying one of the tips above! Photo of yarn bulb courtesy of Shutterstock.

How often you need to be cleaning your germ-infected phone

How often you need to be cleaning your germ-infected phone How often you need to be cleaning your germ-infected phone If you are reading this on a phone, I have bad news for you. Your phone can be a petri dish of germs. It has 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats, one University of Arizona microbiologist found. How does our phone get dirtier than a toilet? We take and check it everywhere. We check it up to 47 times a day, on average. We thoughtlessly take it out as we hold dirty subway poles, as we munch crumbly food, and even as we go to the toilet. That’s how we transfer infectious germs from our screen to our hands. When you pull out your phone in the bathroom, you’re potentially exposing it to fecal bacteria like  E. coli there. We should be paying the same level of concern to cleaning our screens as we already do to washing our hands in bathrooms, germ experts warn. You should be cleaning your phone dailyThe need for cleaning will vary depending on your phone use, but if you’re using it daily in between meals and bathroom breaks, and are healthy, cleaning it daily is good advice. Th at’s one microbiologist’s take.“I clean mine twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening,” Philip Tierno, a clinical professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University’s Langone School of Medicine, told Time. One of these easiest ways to do it is with a clean soft microfiber cloth that will remove most of the germs. If you want to get fancier and do a deeper clean into the nooks and crannies of your screen, dip that cloth in a combination of 60% water and 40% rubbing alcohol. Our phones may not look like disease-carriers, but we hold them to our vulnerable faces all day long. Building a daily habit of wiping the screen is an easy way to avoid letting our phones get the best of us.

The reason most people will never be successful

You need to cut back on spending all of your money and time on crap and entertainment. You have to save more, and invest more in your education and your future. The more successful you become: The less you can justify low quality and the higher your standards become for yourself - As Tony Robbins said, “Remember in life we get what we tolerate! Where in your life is it time to draw the line in the sand and say no more! To yourself? To others?” The more you value your time - and how that time is spent. When you’re at work, you’re 100% at work. When you’re at home, you’re 100% at home. You begin living in the “results-economy,” where you’re less worried about how long something takes you, and you’re more concerned about achieving your desired results more effectively and efficiently. Thus, no longer are you willing to work on a time clock. Instead, you only work and get paid for what you results you produce. You have skin in the game. And because you get paid for your results, you create environments that force you to get your desired results faster. You apply the 80/20 rule. You only focus on those things that produce the best outcomes, and you ignore all else. You get the best mentoring. You work when your energy levels and brain-power are peaked, which for most people is during the first 3 hours of their day. You figure out how to get 2X the results you’re currently getting in half the time. You the re-invest that time you just saved into rest and recovery. You’re totally unplugged spending quality time with your friends and family. You’re investing more and more into your self-improvement. You get to the point where 20% of your time is spent working, and the other 80% is spent either learning or resting. You’re sharpening your saw so that during your work hours, your rested, fresh, and powerful. You’re continually upgraded your mindset, mentorships, skills, abilities, and income. Your life and your identity are a product of your choices. Your personality doesn’t shape who you are. Your behaviors shape who you are.The most powerful choices you can make is to put yourself into environments that force you to rise to new standards. Said historian Will Durant, “I think the ability of the average man could be doubled if it were demanded. If the situation demanded.”You surround yourself with people who have higher standards than you do. Because you know that as a person, you are not a fixed and unchangeable entity.Instead, you know that you are highly flexible and fluid. Your input shapes your mindset and worldview, which shapes your output. That output creates opportunities for the future. As you continually improve your world around you - and as you consistently make better and better choices, your identity changes. Your environment changes. Your confidence and abilities change. You begin taking on much bigger goals. You begin recognizing and appreciating how far you’ve come. You begin collaborating with brilliant people. You transform yourself over and over, all the while continually going deeper and deeper into your “why.”How you do anything is how you do everythingIf your daily behaviors are consistently low quality, what do you expect your life’s output to be?Every area of your life affects every other area of your life. Hence the saying, How you do anything is how you do everything. This is very high-level thinking. It only makes sense for people who have removed everything from their lives they hate. To actually live this principle: your daily and normal life can only be filled with those things you highly value.Your “new normal” needs to continually exceed your previous ideals and dreams. When your days are filled with only those core essentials that mean the world to you - and you’re succeeding in those few areas - you absolutely will dominate in all areas of your life.Because the only things in your life are the th ings you highly value. You’re intrinsically motivated by what you’re doing. The stakes are very high for you. Because everything in your life matters. Your behavior is consequential in every area of your life. If you don’t show up, you get called out. Whether that’s at work with your partners or at home with your kids. You’ve created an environment that expects you to be present. That expects you to show up. And you rise to that expectation. You rise to that expectation because your behavior is increasingly consistent with the person you intend to be.Because your behavior is continually improving, your confidence continually improves. As your confidence improves, your expectation to continue to succeed continually improves. As your expectation to succeed improves, your ability to manifest your dreams and desires becomes powerful.Even more powerfully though, you understand that you should expect everything yet attach to nothing. Regardless of the outcome, your security is int ernal. You expect the best, and that is generally what happens for you. When things start to fall apart, or when you fail, you let it go. You don’t over-attach to any outcomes, whether success or failure. You are fluid and adaptive. You seek data through action, and then take that feedback and continually emerge into something new and better. Continually providing more value. Continually maintain the beginner’s mind. Continually seeking feedback and openness. You have no ego in this game.Your life is increasingly congruent. You’re continuing to learn - which means you are becoming more effective at producing your desired results and then replicating those results. Learning, after all, is a making a permanent change in how you see and operate in the world. If you can’t consistently produce better results, you’re not learning.Getting information in your head is not learning. There must be a change in behavior, or else there is no true understanding. The difference between know ledge and wisdom is that wisdom is the proper application of knowledge.Knowledge isn’t power - it’s potential power. Knowledge only becomes powerful when it’s properly applied and becomes wisdom, experience, and understanding.T.S. Elliot once asked, “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?”We now live in the information economy. Information is not scarce. Information has actually become one of the biggest distractions in our current environment.Spending your time-consuming information won’t set you apart in today’s environment. Filtering through the vast sea of noise and finding the right information, then properly and immediately apply that information to produce better results is how you set yourself apart in today’s word. And not applying that information in a vacuum or echo-chamber. But applying it in the form of collaborations with different types of people - where the whole becomes different from the s um of its parts. Are you living intentionally?Saying “No” to great but irrelevant opportunities is hard.Giving up bad habits is hard.Changing your belief system and expanding your vision takes courage. It’s so easy to revert back to small and mediocre thinking. However, as you come closer to living on a daily basis with your values and ideals, amazing things start to happen. You’ll feel happier.
